Junior Toastmasters Club at DWU

The Junior Toastmasters Club (JTC) at Divine Word University (DWU) came into existence due to the heart and hard work of Late Mr Jun Passilaban.
My skills in public speaking was polished through being a member of this club during my first year at the university. I was a very confident person and  I thought I knew all about there is to know about standing in front and speaking to an audience. But I was wrong! And JTC pointed that out to me.

The following were some of the things that the JTC taught me;
  •  The use of gestures in giving speeches and presentations - I understood the importance of correctly using different gestures. I understood the 'hows' and 'whys' of using gestures. And when to use it and when not to use it. Using gestures adds flavor to the presentation or speech and makes it interesting as long as you use it correctly and not over use it.
  • Using visuals to give presentation or speeches - visuals can aid in giving speeches and presentations. The use of power point presentation slides, charts and objects. JTC taught me to articulately use aids to convey my message in by doing so, I learnt to use it talk to the audience and not to the aids.
  • Introducing a speaker - JTC taught me the steps to introduce speakers in the event that I am a host/master of ceremony for a program. And from my posts you can see that I have mastered this particular technique in the art of public speaking.
If you ever find yourself in DWU, please find time to go observe the activities of the club during one of its session, or in the event that you become part of the community as a student; please I urge you to see Mr Joseph Ogi (jogi@dwu.ac.pg) and ask him how to register.
